Nakatsugi began by joining shorter igusa at the center to create a full TATAMI-omote. What began as a practical technique became part of Bingo's weaving tradition. Today, the NAKATSUGI we offer is woven by hand on a wooden loom.
When natural igusa isn't possible — or isn't the right fit.
When plant quarantine requirements or the intended environment call for a different surface, we can recommend an engineered alternative. It does not have the natural scent of igusa, but the TATAMI structure still provides the feel underfoot.

Natural materials change with time.
Natural igusa changes with time. Its fresh green color gradually turns golden, and its scent becomes softer. Everyday use may also leave light marks or scuffs. These are normal changes in a natural material.

Hiroshima Jozai has been making TATAMI in Hiroshima since 1926. Today, we combine machine precision with hand-finishing to make TATAMI for homes, hotels, cultural properties, and projects in Japan and abroad.
The TATAMI-omote is machine-woven by our omote makers for consistent quality. We complete final assembly, edge-sewing, and inspection by hand in Hiroshima.
